Polygonaceae

The Polygonaceae contains 750 species in 30 genera. It is a common weedy plant. Smartweed is a common plant found in aquatic habitats in the US.

Sea grape (Coccoloba uvifera)

These small trees are often found growing along the oceans and in beaches.


N. American Buckwheat (Eriogonum spp)

The triangular seeds of this plant were traditionally used much like wheat.


Sorrel (Rumex spp)

Common Sorrel has leaves that have a taste similar to kiwis or sour strawberries.


Rhubarb (Rheum rhabarbarum)

Leaves contain poisonous substances, most notably oxalic acid. But, a grown man might have to consume 10 pounds of the leaves to cause a fatality.
