Caryophyllaceae: Pink Family
This family contains 75 genera 2,000 species (Carr). The most common members of this family are the domesticated carnations, the pinks and the campions. These plants are very popular as garden ornamentals. Chickweeds are weedy and are often overlooked because of their small flowers.
Most species in the Caryophyllaceae grow in the Mediterranean regioin. One individual actually grows on Antarctica (one of only two flowering plants that share this title). The easiest way to identify this plant is to look for the swollen nodes and the petals that are often notched.
Systematics: Swollen nodes, P-plastids. Leaves opposite. Most wth 5 petals and 5 sepals
