The Boraginaceae are made up of about 2000 species in around 100 genera. This family stems from the latin source "burra" meaning
rough hair or short wool. This is a very useful key in identifying plants in the family,
which usually have very stiff hairs on the stems and leaves. These hairs are coarse because of the presence of silicon dioxide and calcium carbonate.
